• 2008 Harley Davidson Road King Classic - We stopped to grab some photographs from the Biker poker run on July 13, 2013. One of the stops along the way was Liz’s Bar and Grill in New Melle, Missouri. Many of the shots we got were more for personal use by the owners, but I gave this one a bit more flare as I thought there may be some broader interest.

For some, the ultimate motorcycling experience comes in the form of the Harley Davidson Road King Classic. More than any other motorcycle even any Harley Davidson motorcycle, the Road King Classic appeals to every class of rider. From diehard metric cruiser riders to sport bike riders, all are hard pressed to label the Harley Davidson Road King Classic as anything less than iconic.

Very much a legend of its own right, Harley Davidson has created in the FLHRC Road King Classic a machine which many riders aspire to. It is the Harley Davidson that everyone wants. Returning for 2008 are the Harley Davidson leather covered saddlebags, laced wheels, and wide whitewall tires, while new for this year is tooled fender detailing, a revised chrome tank console, and a six-gallon fuel tank, making this year's Harley Davidson Road King Classic even more travelable than ever before. ABS brakes are an option this year, and electronic cruise control is standard, as is an air-adjustable suspension and Brembo brakes.

 • The Buffalo National River was established by an Act of Congress on March 1, 1972, ending the recurring plans of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to construct one or more dams on the river. The National River designation protects natural rivers from industrial uses, impoundments and other obstructions that may change the natural character of the river or disrupt the natural habitat for the flora and fauna that live in or near the river.

The Buffalo River, located in northern Arkansas, was the first National River to be designated in the United States. The Buffalo River is slightly more than 150 miles long. The Buffalo National River gets its start in national forest country, nearly within rock-throwing distance of the highest point in the Ozarks. Some floating takes place in the headwaters area (the 'Hailstone' trip from Dixon Road to Arkansas 21 is almost legendary among serious paddlers), but, for most, this is a good place to put on the hiking boots.

A real treat is the Upper Buffalo Wilderness, a 14,200-acre tract managed by the Ozark National Forest and the Buffalo National River. Visitors to the area can expect to see caves, bluffs, waterfalls, old cabin sites, natural springs and maybe even a local black bear.

 • Take 270 to the Page/364 exit, heading west. Once you're on Page, the second exit is Maryland Heights Parkway. Exit here and go north. The second stop light is Creve Coeur Mill Road; take a right. Just after crossing over the railroad tracks, there is a park entrance on the left. Proceed through the gates and up the hill. You will see several parking lots next to the soccer fields. There's also parking on the other side of the lake; to get there, follow Maryland Heights Parkway to Marine and go right

 • Columbia, an adult female bald eagle, came to the National Eagle Center in 2003 as a juvenile. She hatched in the spring of 2001.

After feeding on road kill near Dunbar, WI, Columbia was struck by a van. This accident left her with an open fracture near her right shoulder. While this wound was significant and would render her unable to fly again, the accident most likely saved Columbia's life. During treatment for her injuries, Columbia was found to have nearly twice the lethal dose of lead in her blood.

Lead is extremely dangerous for eagles. Just a tiny amount of lead can be lethal in 4-5 days. She was able to be treated for lead poisoning, but any damage already incurred would be irreversible.

Columbia arrived at the National Eagle Center just a few months before the Space Shuttle Columbia mission that ended in tragedy. Columbia was named in honor of the commander and crew of this shuttle.

 • The Third Avenue Bridge (originally known as the St. Anthony Falls Bridge). This is a landmark structure of in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It carries road traffic across the Mississippi River and right over the upper fringes of Saint Anthony Falls. The multi-arched bridge meets with Third Avenue in downtown Minneapolis at its south end, but curves as it crosses the river, and connects with Central Avenue on its north end. The shallow curve in the bridge was built to avoid fractures in the limestone bedrock that supports the bridge piers.

Much of the design work was done by Minneapolis city engineer Frederick W. Cappelen, who was responsible for a number of other local bridges and structures. Beyond the bridge you see a high industrial area setting the mood for my approach to this shot.

 • A View From Under The Page Bridge Missouri River Crossing.

The Creve Coeur Park Connector is now open! This 3.6 mile long bike lane enables cyclists to use the Page Avenue / 364 bridge to cross the Missouri River, totally separate from automotive traffic. On the west end, it connects to the Katy Trail at mile 42.8, just south of the Family Arena. On the east end, it connects to the Creve Coeur Park trails at the park's southwest corner. It mostly runs parallel with hwy 364 (Page Ave).

Take 270 to the Page/364 exit, heading west. Go 6 miles to exit 14, Upper Bottom Road / Arena Parkway. Go right (north), and take an immediate right on Hemsath. Follow Hemsath for 0.3 mile, and take the right turn into the parking lot just after Hemsath curves left.
